Stuart Brown rolls us through his take on 2007 - More Web Design Trends & Cliches:

“It’s been well over a year since I compiled the original list of web clichés, so I figured it was time to revisit some of the trends currently prevalent in web design now.”

Some interesting punters have turned up in the parade along with some gorgeous descriptive illustrations. Succinct and devoid of the typical fluff and space fillers many such “reviews” tend to collect.

Michael Lopp has written one of the single most quotable articles I’ve read in recent times, entitled The Nerd Handbook:

“Your nerd spent a lot of his younger life being an outcast because of his strange affinity with the computer. This created a basic bitterness in his psyche that is the foundation for his humor.”

“Now, combine this basic distrust of everything with your nerd’s other natural talents and you’ll realize that he sees humor is another game.”

It’s frightening just how ‘close’ many observations are and how many I can put my hand up to — truly required reading for anyone that works with, lives with, or simply wishes to better understand the nerd.

I still find this to be an amazing source of inspiration, both in the sense of showcase of design, and the often beautiful typeface selections.

"Here’s how I recommend installing major new OS releases for typical users." — Mr Gruber with some of the most sensible upgrade advice I have read in a very long time. And he is right on the money.

From .net to XSS and everything in between.

"Maintaining motivation requires paying attention to your behavior, listening to your instincts, and learning how to encourage, bargain, and even trick yourself into being creative." — the essence of content development and a great motivational tonic.

Have to say, Fabiol does genuinely capture that ‘print’ feel, whereas Paperback, in my somewhat non-learnered opinion displays well as a heading - Palatino Sans strikes me as an ideal textual offset for photography. I know.. I have much to learn.

"Firefox 2.0 introduced a number of refinements to its tabbed browsing UI. Among them was the addition of close buttons on tabs." — my pet hate is accidentally closing firefox tabs via the x button when changing tabs - option 0, is the cure.

".. pledges to bring you only high quality scanned images of instruction manuals in their full, original format with all original artwork and other graphical elements intact." — these guys are indepensible for abandonware (and recent) game manuals. #

geek 101 - drying clothes

Today did not start off that well.

Running late as I was, I discovered to my dismay a certain undergarment I had intended to wear, was still yet to fully dry.

This, was a bit of a conundrum, given I had little more than a few minutes to brew a coffee and head out to work.

A desperate search began for a suitable replacement, which turned out to be a fruitless quest. Faced with a pressing time-frame I had to identify the best way to proceed, with little time to spare.

It should be noted at this point, that I do not have a clothes dryer.. even if I had such a device, they can be slow to weave their magic and dry clothing. It is also pertinent at this time to disclose that the item happened to be the only pair of “almost dry” boxers.

Smart category exclusion

The scenario:
You want to exclude a category from being processed by a post loop, with posts in said category having more than one category1, keep wordpress db calls to a minimum2, no dropping of data after you’ve already hit the db3 and finally provide a set limit of posts.
The quest:
After a quick grep of
