Came across this earlier today - could it be the open source alternative to OS X and Garageband1?
Coming this April… Ubuntu Studio.

I’ve been pondering restarting podcasting, indeed Heilemann decided to volunteer me for a potential Habari podcast candidate2, in a recent comment via IRC. However the biggest stumbling block has been finding a Microsoft Windows, or Linux based audio editing software or platform that makes the process less intensive and time consuming, without breaking the bank in the process.
There are audio products for Linux right now, however the underlying OS really needs to be geared to handle memory extremely well, needs to be responsive and certainly needs to be focused on media, as typical Linux installs3 can end up a little bloated - or lacking the right mix if a minimalist approach is taken.
The downside, sadly is that the project looks to be somewhat prenatal in the development cycle — the wiki indicates some progress, with a number of packages being considered and or worked on — although at least one date has slipped already.
However, all is not lost.. with recent improvements in Ubuntu’s media handling the future does look promising4, where a solidly performing, recognisable and reliably distribution is pushed to the next level and ready to foot it with the likes of Apple in media handling.
Which may make the decision to resume podcasting a little easier5 — although does anyone, really, want to hear me podcast all over again? ;)

- .. just between you and me, I think he’s just too chicken ;) (↩)
- .. and even stock Ubuntu isn’t immune (↩)
- .. although I think April, is just a little unrealistic (↩)
- .. so would a decked out dual core Mac Mini rocking up on my doorstep, but that ain’t gonna happen any time soon (↩)
