.. due to a huge number of reasons, the incoherent ramblings podcast is no more.
While I could simply have 404′d it, that just plain annoys the shit out of me when I myself end up at some jerk’s 404 due to said jerk not having the good sense (or reason) to actually leave something in it’s place.
Thus while the podcast is gone (no doubt forgotten as well) in it’s place is the addition of an overhauled “shop window” in the form of a new home page - think simplistic portal, on acid. :)
While blogs have become all the rage, they have also become over-complexified works of modern art that are often virtually impossible to navigate, have far too many bells and whistles, and generally evolve into CSS mutations at the expense of actual content1.
Granted - “I still feel the good in him” when it comes to a number of my daily reads, however I hate to say this (and am likely to receive much flack) but, while Michael’s work on K2 is very cool, his start into the overhaul (code named ‘invader’) of the ‘bonsai I’m afraid to say leaves me cold. He’s gone and done the one thing I never felt he would do - over-engineer for the sake of over-engineering, not for the sake of usability, form or function2.
Thus begins the slow yet unyielding complete overhaul of incoherently dot net. The new shop front is just the start.
To be continued..
- Be honest, how many blogs have you visited recently where content took a back seat to asides, latest entries, 4000 different pointless plugins and gaudy useless crap? In my case? Far too many. (↩)
- I would go so far as to say incoherently.net itself has even started to slide down that slippery “must-have-pointlessness” slope. (↩)

I like the new invader, its the sort of minimal website Im always striving to make.
Unfortunately I have a constant battle with myself as to whether or not to add in all these bells and whistles.
i hope you keep your blog up to date, Im not so into podcasts atm as Im listening to audio books, but Ive still got you on my NetNewsWire subscriptions. ;-)

And here I thought I didn’t have enough bells or whistles on my site. Heck, I don’t even have kazoos.

It’s certainly a bit of a departure from the stock standard style of wordpress “10 posts per page” that michael tended to stick with, so in that regard, it’s not bad - the theme is obviously a work in progress.
The dark layout imho is better than the light - seems to add a bit more depth which I think helps set the design off. I think if he can keep the plugin’s down to a level of ‘required’ rather than ‘unnecessary’ it’ll work out well (which is something I’ve had struggles with as well).

Hey, I fully plead guilty - I just added yet another plugin for the footnotes (ironically something I swore I’d never do).. :)
I guess my post was just observation. After looking at my own site & realising it really is shit right now, I’ve started noticing the same things I’ve fallen into the trap of using elsewhere.

Plugins are the blogger’s variant of shiny toys. ;)
I like the new front page, by the way. It was a bit of a surprise, but I think it’s neat.

Just do what makes you happy. If it makes you happy to keep a list of links, do that. If you’d rather write longer articles and get people to link to them, make that your focus. Rearrange your site so it relects how you actually use it. That’s what I’ve been in the process of trying to do over the last week or so, it’s not the easiest thing in the world. In any case, keep it up.

I think Dave is right; your site’s design is a reflection of your thoughts and ambitions and so, the choices you make (less/more glitz, less/more focus on individual areas) are personal ones.
Anyways, as always, looking forward to seeing what you have planned.
