Oh noes..

Okay - so I’ve just had to perform a recovery. WP 1.6a completely trashed my database.

Not fucking happy, Jan. There is no way, no way I will, nor could anyone convince me that 1.6a is even close to usable.

Not while it fucking trashes databases it’s not. I tried everything to recover the database to no avail - in the end, I had to purge the database and run from a 2 day old backup.

As a result I have lost the last 48 hours of posts and comments - impressed with this, I am not.. yes, mmmm. While I’m thankful I had a pre domain jump backup, I am currently kicking myself that I skipped last night’s ‘usual’ backup.

Upshot: don’t fucking use 1.6a. It will destroy your database and corrupt your women, while drinking foreign ale & laughing haughtily. You have been warned.

  1. If Else

As much as I sympathise with your pain, it is alpha and labelled *do not use* so you were warned:-)

However, if you can reproduce what happened, then it’ll be worth raising it with the developers so that they can address this.

  2. brendan

I’m going to look at running a small test - yeah.

Yes I know it’s alpha, however (to be confirmed) it looks like once you upgrade the database, you can’t run it with the stable version(s). As in, a one way ticket.

  3. brendan

There’s something odd with comment ‘new line’ handling in 1.6a as well (replaces line breaks with ‘rnrn’, ?!) - pretty much the reason I tried to roll backwards - *baad plan*, as that is when the database was unable to be used by WP stable. :-)

  4. shorty114

I agree with Phu, and what most other people are probably going to tell you.

It’s ALPHA software, not for general use. If you take that chance, well, if it fucks up, it’s your problem and you really shouldn’t complain, since it is you who dared to use un-finished software.

  5. shorty114

By the way, your /feed/ is blank. WP-Cache maybe?

  6. brendan

The feed is a-ok for me - was working fine last night as well.

Thanks for the feedback guys - however I’m pretty sure I’ve got the the *Alpha* bit covered.

  7. shorty114

    Ah, the feed’s back again.

  8. IO ERROR

This is why there are many and repeated warnings to not run unstable versions on a production site. This is why it’s not easy to download.

I ran the 1.3/1.5 nightlies for months while things broke all around me. But I also know how to fix them. I wouldn’t go anywhere near 1.6 until it’s ready.

  9. brendan

I never had a major issue with the 1.5 nightlies - 1.6a appears to do something to the database. As I have said, it wasn’t until I attempted to regress back a version that the (database) problems started. Again, I *know* it’s Alpha software.

I’ve not, in recent times, had to blow away a database and recover from a backup after playing with a devel version of WP before - certainly a new one. :-)

  10. Nat

Well think of it this way, you can conisder your site a martyr :p

Anyway, i hope everything turns out well.

  11. shorty114

Well, if you knew it was alpha and untested software, why do you start crying about it and say “It will destroy your database and corrupt your women, while drinking foreign ale & laughing haughtily. You have been warned.”

You were warned too. Stop crying, it’s all your fault.

  12. Christopher Black

shorty, you’re the only one in this thread I’ve seen come close to crying with your responses to the post. Anyone is going to be upset if a release — alpha or not — breaks something beyond repair. It’s not like he’s telling people not to use any version of WordPress so the knee-jerk defense shields you’re using can be turned off. Or something.

  13. brendan

“You were warned too. Stop crying, it?s all your fault.”

I’m not crying - I am a little surprised at how easily it trashed a database (note, I have not taken a broadside shot at WP in general), considering that’s not something previous betas or alpha’s have done - it usually takes quite a bit to render a database unusable.. if nothing else, this entry will serve as a reminder to others to make backups before contemplating 1.6 builds.

I have linked in an example post where a developer suggested WP 1.6 is quite stable - I beg to differ and have illustrated the point that 1.6 has a long way to go before I’d recommend anyone even considers playing with it - test environment or otherwise.

You are quite welcome to your opinion - however unless the universe has taken a sudden left-hander, this is my blog, thus I am entitled to voice my thoughts. Being an “I told you so” styled asshat doesn’t make you any more “right” than someone who has a little more respect for others would be.
